Our Struggle for Human Rights

In 2016 FORUM-ASIA celebrates its 25th Anniversary. A momentous occasion, which gives us the opportunity to look back on 25 years of struggle for human rights in Asia. A moment to reflect, to learn and to plan our focus for the future.

This website is an online version of the publication 'Our Struggle for Human Rights - 25 Years of FORUM-ASIA'. It features stories and information about our beginnings, our developments and upcoming challenges in the form of chapters, cases, organisational profiles and videos. The content for our anniversary publication was collected in different ways. 36 people were interviewed, some 80 participated in different meetings and consultations, and some 35 written inputs were submitted. Documents from the FORUM-ASIA archive, as well as online sources were used to finalise different parts of the publication.

While the publication was developed to commemorate our anniversary, we hope it will inspire all that have or want to become part of the human rights movement throughout Asia. The struggle continues!

Reflecting on the Past

To be able to move forward in the future, it is essential to reflect on and learn from the past. The time bar below offers examples from the past 25 years of human rights work in Asia through different case studies from across the region. Stories that highlight specific experiences of human rights defenders. Stories of success as well as of challenges and limitations. If you would like to share your own story, please contact us through the information provided below.

Through the side bars you can find more information about the history of FORUM-ASIA as well as of the history of the human rights movement in Asia. Additionally, you will find an overview of lessons that we have learnt during our struggle for human rights, and individual contributions from people who have been involved in the human rights field in the last decades.

Finally, you will also find short commemorations of people, human rights defenders, who we have lost along the way, but who have not been forgotten. They have been too many on our journey in the struggle for human rights. People who passed away or who have became victims of enforced disappearances. We are aware that there are many more who should be honoured. If you would like to highlight other individuals, please do get in touch with us. We hope to contribute to assure they are not forgotten.

Looking to the Future

In this section you will find reflections, inputs and ideas for the future of human rights in Asia. While it is impossible to predict the future, it is crucial for every organisation, every movement and every activist to try to foresee certain trends and developments, and take these into consideration in their plans. We hope the information offered here will help in such attempts.

The chapter on future of human rights presents an overview of issues and possible ways forward as they were identified by the various people who gave an input to this publication. Additionally you can find the strategic plan of FORUM-ASIA for the coming years.

Finally, you will find more stories, videos and information from both individuals and groups of human rights defenders from all across region. Passionate and committed people who have been and continue to work on the promotion and protection of human rights in Asia. If you would like to contribute to these reflections, please contact us and share your views and experiences on the future of human rights in our beloved region.
